Ivan Barkhorn

Ivan Barkhorn

Managing Director

During more than 25 years of strategy consulting, Ivan has served a broad portfolio of clients—including Sony, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and several of the world’s largest foundations—on topics ranging from private equity investment to conservation, population, and economic development.

Before founding Redstone, Ivan spent the first eleven years of his consulting career with McKinsey & Company. As a McKinsey partner he specialized in consumer electronics strategies, serving clients from both the New York and Tokyo offices.

At Redstone, Ivan has helped large philanthropic programs — in places such as Brazil, British Columbia, Peru, Bolivia, Madagascar, the American West, and Nepal — meet the highest strategic management and return on investment criteria. He recently co-taught a course on this subject at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Science. Ivan holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management and lives with his wife and two dogs in Boulder, Colorado.

Lawrence H. Linden

Senior Advisor

Larry serves as a pro bono Senior Advisor to Redstone on conservation- and economic-development-related engagements. He is the Founder and Trustee of the Linden Trust for Conservation, which uses state-of-the art financial advice and monetary support to build environmental markets and to structure and execute deals in conservation finance.

In 2008 he retired as former General Partner and Managing Director of Goldman Sachs and Company, where he was, over time, head of information technology; head of securities, commodities, and treasury operations; and chairman of the global control and compliance committee, and led the build out of the firm’s global trading infrastructure. Earlier, he was a partner at McKinsey & Company, where he focused on the industrial, technology, and financial sectors. From 1978 to 1981, he was a member of the White House staff working on issues relating to energy, transportation, and the environment.

He is chairman of the board of trustees of Resources for the Future, vice chair and chair of the Executive Committee of the board of trustees of the World Wildlife Fund, and a member of several advisory committees at MIT where he has established the Linden Earth Systems fellowships. He has lectured widely on the management of large-scale conservation programs. Larry received a BSE from Princeton University and an SM and PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dietmar Grimm

Principal

Through more than nine years of consulting, Dietmar has helped philanthropies, businesses, and NGOs ensure the highest social return on their investments. As one of the first consultants to work on philanthropic issues at Redstone, his experience spans conservation, economic development, population, and reproductive health and rights issues in North America, Europe, Latin America, South America, and Africa. Through his work, Dietmar has focused on identifying the highest impact strategies that also account for the limitations and complexities of the real world.

His past projects include work on alleviating poverty in sub-Saharan Africa, stabilizing global population while increasing reproductive rights, and planning for large-scale conservation investments in the Colorado River Basin, Gulf of California, and the Amazon region of South America. Dietmar also serves as Redstone’s lead recruiter among his other responsibilities as part of the firm’s management team.

Prior to joining Redstone, Dietmar was a consultant for three years with McKinsey & Company in the San Francisco and Munich offices. His work at McKinsey focused on corporate finance and marketing, particularly in high-tech companies. Dietmar holds a BA with distinction from the University of Colorado where he was a Presidents Leadership Class scholar and Phi Beta Kappa member. He is fluent in German and functional in French, and he and his wife live in Boulder, Colorado.

Senior Project Manager

Since joining Redstone in 2005, Lee has helped many philanthropic programs increase the outcome orientation of their strategies and grantmaking. He has led projects in conservation, energy and climate, population, and reproductive health and rights, helping philanthropic programs and NGOs develop or refine their strategic plans and communicate the results of these efforts to their colleagues and their boards.

Prior to joining Redstone, Lee was a consultant for four years at a firm founded by former Monitor Consulting partners, where he specialized in increasing client profitability through customer behavior analysis. Lee’s work included expected value analysis, financial modeling, and scenario-based modeling, such as spectrum valuation modeling for wireless operators in preparation for wireless spectrum auctions.

Lee received his MBA from the Yale School of Management and graduated cum laude from Harvard University with a BA in economics. While in business school Lee served as a Teaching Assistant for three courses: Decision Analysis and Game Theory; Hypothesis Testing and Regression; and Nonprofit Entrepreneurship. At Harvard, Lee was awarded a Harvard College Scholarship for academic excellence. Lee and his wife live in Louisville, Colorado, where they enjoy bicycling, bouldering, hiking, and skiing together.

Valerie Hovland

Valerie Hovland

Project Analytics Manager

Since joining Redstone in 2005, Valerie has helped develop analytical approaches for projects covering terrestrial and freshwater conservation, fisheries management, economic development, education, energy and climate, population, and reproductive health and rights. Geographically, these projects have spanned North America, South America, Africa, and southern Asia.

Prior to joining Redstone, Valerie worked at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory focusing on innovative technology in advanced vehicles and fuel cell development. She has extensive experience in modeling, from spreadsheet calculations to complex finite element analysis.

Valerie holds MS and BS degrees from MIT in mechanical engineering with a concentration in economics. At MIT Valerie maintained a 4.9/5.0 cumulative grade point average and was a member of both honor societies on campus. She also served as a teaching assistant for Systems, Modeling, and Control.

Valerie lives in Boulder, Colorado and travels widely. She has summited Mount Everest, Shishapangma (the 14th highest mountain in the world), and Denali (the highest mountain in North America). Valerie also helps fundraise for the NGO Room to Read and has raised the funds to build a school in Nepal in 2010.

Judd Boomhower

Associate Project Manager

Before joining Redstone, Judd worked on a Fulbright Scholarship in Venezuela's Los Roques Archipelago National Park, where he studied the ecology of coral reef fishes. Previous to his Fulbright experience, he was a research fellow at Environmental Defense, where he analyzed marine conservation issues in U.S. fisheries.

Judd has a BA and an MS from Stanford University. His undergraduate thesis resulted in a method to quantify the success of Costa Rica's Payments for Environmental Services Program in reducing deforestation, and has been published in the journal Conservation Biology. At Stanford Judd was the recipient of the Lokey Stanford Environmental Fellowship and played for the national-championship-winning men's ultimate Frisbee team. He is fluent in Spanish.

Nathan Huttner

Nathan Huttner

Associate

Nathan joined Redstone after completing his MBA at the Yale School of Management where he was a Silver Anniversary Scholar and received nineteen academic distinctions in his two years. He was also teaching assistant in Yale’s course on competitive strategy and its course on innovation. Prior to Yale Nathan was an associate at Katzenbach Partners, a strategy consulting firm founded by former partners of McKinsey and Company. At Katzenbach he served clients in the energy and pharmaceuticals industries on issues of strategy and organization, including extensive analysis of energy supply and marketing.

Nathan received his BA magna cum laude and with distinction in economics from Yale College, focusing his studies on international economics and economic development. He was executive director during his senior year of the Elmseed Enterprise Fund, a student-run microlender, and he now serves on the board of directors. A native of upstate New York, Nathan is excited to play soccer and hike in the west.

Tim Magee

Tim Magee

Operations Research Specialist

Tim has 20 years of experience in developing and applying optimization in a variety of applications. He is expert in non-linear and linear programming. His projects have included asset allocation for pension plans, optimizing multinational financial flows at a global drug company, expanding telecommunication infrastructure at a regional Bell, configuring satellite constellations for NASA, and scheduling physicians for an HMO.

Tim holds undergraduate degrees in mathematics and chemical engineering - and is a candidate for a PhD in operations research - from MIT. He has taught operations strategy, operations management, and business statistics at the University of Colorado.

Iris Shim

Iris Shim

Analyst

Iris received her BA from Yale University in East Asian Studies and Religious Studies. She interned with Goldman Sachs in their investment banking division, where she analyzed potential sell-side opportunities in the Korean market.  Iris was awarded a Yale-China Association Public Service Fellowship, which was used to promote human development projects in rural China through the Zigen Fund.

While at Yale, Iris was a Richard Light Fellow and a freshman counselor; she also volunteered in numerous service organizations.

Jason Blau

Jason Blau

Analyst

Jason holds a BA from Yale University in Political Economics, specializing in development studies. His thesis analyzed regulatory schemes to balance economic growth and environmental protection in Chile, where he spent the summer as a Bates Fellow.

At Yale, Jason served as an officer of the Yale Debate Association and was a semifinalist in the World Universities Debating Championship. Jason is a native of Chicago, an Eagle Scout, and is proficient in Spanish.


Lorraine McCloud

Lorraine McCloud

Administrator

Lorraine is responsible for administration at Redstone, including office management, travel, and accounting.  She is a career administrator with extensive experience, and is the lead person at Redstone for everything associated with our office and operations.

A native of Washington, Lorraine is now a confirmed Coloradan.  She is married with two adult children, and can be found riding her Harley Davidson on the back roads of the West in her free time.
